A court in India’s Orissa state has acquitted 54 Hindu activists who
were charged with setting fire to a Baptist church and the homes of 14
Christian families during the anti-Christian violence of Christmas 2007.
The court found the defendants not guilty because of an alleged “lack of evidence”—although Christian witnesses found the evidence overwhelming. The acquittals, coming after years of delay in bringing the defendants to trial, continue a pattern of legal impunity for the Hindu extremists who killed over 100 people and drove more than 50,000 from their homes in the Kandhamal region.
